The LUSD is a decentralized USD stablecoin issued on the Liquity protocol by depositing an ETH collateral. The interest of the protocol is that it is a fully autonomous smart contract with no administrators or governance mechanisms, and is therefore unstoppable. The LUSD is thus entirely backed by ETH, and follows the price of the USD through a price oracle.
Right now, 1 LUSD is worth $.
Right now, 1 US dollar is equal to LUSD.
Created in 2020, Liquity is a Swiss company developing the decentralized protocol of the same name that allows to borrow and redeem the LUSD stablecoin against ETH.
A stablecoin is a type of cryptocurrency designed to have the same value as a given fiat currency, like the US dollar. Its purpose is to let users invest in and out of volatile crypto-assets easily while remaining on chain, to facilitate crypto payments, and to denominate the price of other tokens in currencies that people are familiar with.
Because LUSD is 100% backed by a fully decentralized crypto collateral (ETH) and because the Liquity protocol is autonomous and censorship resistant, LUSD is considered to be one of the safest stablecoins available today. For a more detailed analysis of LUSD's safety, read its rating on bluechip.org.
The price of LUSD tracks the price of the US dollar by using both the price of its collateral (ETH) and a price oracle that provides a USD-ETH exchange rate in real time.
