GHO is the stablecoin of Aave, the leading decentralized lending platform on the blockchain. Launched in July 2023, GHO is an algorithmic stablecoin pegged to the US dollar. It is backed by a basket of crypto collaterals, including ETH and Aave's own governance token AAVE. It is minted by depositing a crypto collateral into one of Aave's lending pools.

Aave is the leading decentralized lending protocol in the Ethereum ecosystem. With it, users can freely lend crypto for an interest rate, and borrow funds against a crypto collateral. It was created in 2017 under the name ETHLend, then renamed Aave in 2018.
A stablecoin is a type of cryptocurrency designed to have the same value as a given fiat currency, like the US dollar. Its purpose is to let users invest in and out of volatile crypto-assets easily while remaining on chain, to facilitate crypto payments, and to denominate the price of other tokens in currencies that people are familiar with.

The GHO is designed to follow the price of the US dollar, it is therefore determined by it. Maintaining such peg mechanism is challenging, and it is possible for the GHO to deviate from the US dollar price for various technical or market reasons.
