What is Tezos?

Launched in September 2018, Tezos is an open source blockchain based on a Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism and self-upgrading features to prevent the need for hard forks. The tez (XTZ) is the native cryptocurrency of Tezos and is used to pay for transaction fees on the network, secure the chain through staking, and participate in the chain's governance. Tezos is backed by the Tezos Foundation, based in Switzerland's Crypto Valley.
