As you probably know by now, Bitcoin was invented back in 2008 as a peer-to-peer electronic cash system that would provide a decentralized and uncensorable digital money.

Whether it was by design or because it was victim of its success, the slow transaction time and costly fees led Bitcoin to be used more like digital gold than a tool for actual payments.

To solve that problem and make Bitcoin usable for day-to-day money transfers, the Lightning technology was launched in 2018 as an extension of the Bitcoin network.

Similar in purpose (but not in design) to Ethereum's Layer-2 networks like Arbitrum or Optimism, Lightning allows to make instant and virtually free transactions, and finally enables BTC to be used as convenient tool for day-to-day micropayments.

Today, we're excited to announce that you can now enjoy the full Lightning experience with us! You can:

  • Buy Bitcoin directly on the Lightning network easily, by card or bank transfer.
  • Spend your sats with Bridge Wallet in all compatible stores (see below).
  • Cash out Bitcoin from Lightning back on your bank account.

We plan to let advanced users run their own Lightning node in Bridge Wallet in the near future. In the meantime, the current release takes care of all the complex channel and liquidity management features of Lightning for you, which allows for a much easier user experience and completely free transactions.

If you already have your own Lightning node and wallet, you can of course use our service to buy and sell sats with it.

How to pay with Bitcoin Lightning

  1. Download and install Bridge Wallet on your phone.
  2. Top up funds on the Lightning network by card or bank transfer.
  3. To pay something, go on the sats screen, choose "Send" a scan the QR code or enter the beneficiary address and amount.
  4. Confirm, and that's it! The transaction will be instantly processed.

Accept Bitcoin Lightning in your business

You can start accepting payments in Bitcoin on the Lightning network very easily, wherever you are! All you need is our mobile app Bridge Wallet, nothing else required. Here's how it works:

  1. Download and install Bridge Wallet on your phone.
  2. Each time a client wants to pay with Bitcoin Lightning, you enter in the app the amount in your reference currency and show the resulting QR code to the client.
  3. The client scans the QR code from his/her own wallet and confirms the transaction.
  4. You instantly receive sats in your wallet, without fees.
  5. You cash out your sats at any time from the app to your bank account in 19 fiat currencies, exchange fees apply.
